Conçu comme la prédelle d’un retable perdu, ce récit à double point de fuite réunit les spéculations d’un génie mélancolique et fantasque, et l’imagination impatiente d’un enfant apprenti.
Philippe Maupeu enseigne la littérature médiévale et la rhétorique de l’image à l’université Toulouse-Jean-Jaurès. 

Through the eyes of his young twelve-year-old apprentice, to whom he teaches the rudiments of painting, we enter the artist’s laboratory and are introduced to the making of colours and brushes as well as his obsession with perspective. We follow the master’s techniques, his relationship to people of note and the supposed or, rather, legendary origin of his nickname, Uccello.
Philippe Maupeu teaches medieval literature and the rhetoric of the image at the University of Toulouse-Jean-Jaurès.
